ZINE.

Dear Students,

Since we are all stuck at home and isolated from others I thought this would be a good opportunity to create a system where we can share our ideas and artworks. During our time apart you will be creating a graded weekly ZINE.  I have provided you with a ZINE sample in your packet along with sheets of plain white drawing paper. You will need a pen or pencil and scissors.  Please return your original ZINE in your packet weekly.

What is a ZINE?

  • A ZINE, pronounced ‘zeen,’  is a little printed publication much like a magazine.  It is used to share information and experiences such as: photographs, experiences, types of music, news, poetry and ART!

Why are we making ZINES?

  • In times of isolation, it is important to share our thoughts, feelings and ideas so that we don’t feel alone.

How are we going to make a ZINE?

  • The type of zine we are going to make is created out of one sheet of paper.  I have included how to fold this piece of paper in the zine I created for you called QUARANTZINE (clever huh?).

What do I need to make a zine?

  • Since zines are so easy to make you don’t need a whole lot of materials to create them.  All you need is an idea, a piece of paper, a pencil or pen and scissors (or if you are really crafty you can tear instead of cut.)

How will I be graded?

You will be graded by:

  1. Your effort.  Did you really try to create something special?

  2. How complete it is.  Did you fill every page?

  3. Your imagination.

What do I need to do?

  1. Each Week you will need to turn in a ZINE.

  2. Create a DUMMY (rough draft) of your ZINE.  Practice folding and cutting a piece of paper.  Figure out the layout of each page. Look at the ZINE I gave you.  What do you notice about it? I folded the ZINE first and then drew on each page.  You may also draw on a separate piece of paper, then cut and paste your work on each of the pages in order.

  3. Create a TITLE for your zine. PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR WORK.

  4. Follow the prompt given.  For example if one of the prompts is about food, think about the following questions:  What have you been eating while at home? What does your food look like? Do you have a recipe you want to share? What do you wish you were eating? Etc. You DO NOT need to follow the prompt, you may come up with your own idea if you wish.  It does not need to be a true story you are telling, it can be fiction.

  5. SHARE your unique experiences.

  6. Fill each page of the zine, including the cover and back

  7. Turn in your zine.  You can send a nicely cropped picture of your zine to my email: MsTaylorsArtClass@gmail.com, you may drop off the original with your other school work, or you may mail it.  Please let me know if you will be mailing and I will get you a pre-paid envelope.

  8. Collect the zines I will be sending you in a box.  Use an old shoe box, cereal box, tissue box or any other box that can hold your collection of zines.
